Long Live Her Majesty the Queen
August 12th, H.M. The Queen’s Birthday - The Mother of all Mothers
10-Aug-2010
Everyone holds a special place in their hearts for their mother. There is no bond in the world stronger, physically or spiritually than that of a mother and her child. In Thailand, this special union is celebrated on the same day as H.M. the Queen’s Birthday, which signifies a memorable day for all Thai persons.
Born M.R. Sirikit Kitiyakara on August 12, 1932, Her Royal Highness is affectionately revered across the nation for her kindness and devotion to the plight of her people by trying to improve their living conditions and general welfare. She is also noted for her passion and interest for Thai arts and crafts, which she has played a vital role in revitalizing and reviving the country’s arts and crafts industry. The Bang Sai Arts & Crafts Center is the Queen’s brainchild, which she is immensely proud to be a part of its existence.
Behind every strong and successful man is a solid and supportive woman. The queen met the King (he was then the Prince) while they both studied abroad in Switzerland. They became much closer when the Prince was hospitalized in a biking accident, and from then on they have been together ever since. They were engaged in November 1949and married a year later when the King returned to Thailand to take up his Royal duties. The Queen of Thailand represents the role of the strong women that bind Thailand together and ensure the country has a sturdy foundation on which to move forward. The double usage of the Queen’s birthday as Mother’s Day is a mark of respect for Her Royal Highness and all the mothers across the nation. This is a festive time for Thai people, who celebrate the day with unparalleled gusto. The joyous atmosphere of Mother’s Day sweeps across the entirety of the nation like a tornado.
Mother’s Day is celebrated right across the nation, and is a national holiday when all the banks and government offices are closed for the occasion. The country’s love for the Queen’s birthday and Mother’s Day ensures this is an important date and celebrated by everyone, from the rural northeastern regions to the Muslim inhabited deep south. Everyone will be wearing blue to honor this day, because each day in Thailand is assigned a colour with Friday being blue, which is the day the Queen was born.
If you are visiting this fascinating kingdom at this time of the year, you can also take part in the festivities and gain a true understanding of what makes Thailand and its people tick. The nation loves a good party, and what better time to celebrate than the birthday of Her Royal Highness and Mother’s Day. During this sacred day, remember to cast a thought towards your own mother because this is fundamentally a time to celebrate that special bond that never dies.

Ford Motor to invest in Rayong, Thailand
25-06-10
Ford Motor Co is investing US$450 million (15 billion baht) to construct a new passenger vehicle plant in Thailand. The initiative is the first major foreign investment in the country to be announced since last month’s deadly political unrest. "The region is arguably the world’s most dynamic and there is no doubt it will continue to be a key driver of the future growth of Ford Motor," said Alan Mulally, global president and chief executive of Ford. The plant will be located in Rayong and will begin manufacturing the next generation of Ford Focus cars in 2012 for the domestic and Asia-Pacific markets. It will also be able to produce a range of other vehicles. The plant will have an initial capacity of 150,000 units a year, of which 85% will be destined for markets outside of Thailand. The 750,000-square-metre plant will be fully integrated to support painting, trim and final assembly. It will follow Ford’s global model of sustainability initiatives and environmentally responsible processes and systems, said Sue Cischke, group vice-president for sustainability, environment and safety engineering. "This new Thai facility will strictly adhere to Ford’s global policy that our operations, products and services accomplish their functions in a manner that responsibly protects health and the environment," she said. Ford plans to purchase up to $800 million (26 billion baht) worth of local components through Thailand’s supplier network to support production at the new facility. The plant has the potential to employ 2,200 workers directly and 8,800 indirectly through its supplier and dealer networks. Ford earlier co-invested $500 million with Mazda in an automobile plant in Rayong to build Ford Ranger pickup trucks for 130 markets across the world. At this plant, Ford plans to build the Fiesta subcompact car in the third quarter this year to supply Thai and regional markets. "We remain confident in the future of Thailand’s auto industry," said Peter Fleet, president of Ford Asean, based in Bangkok. "With a world-class supply base, a highly efficient logistics network and a skilled workforce, Thailand continually proves its competitive strength in the international auto industry."

The accord between the Thai government and the Swiss Federal Council replaces the previous agreement written in 1984, which limited the number of airline flights for passengers and air cargo between the two countries. The agreement is intended to promote air services, commerce, tourism and improved relations overall.
At present, there are 15 direct weekly flights each way between Thailand and Switzerland - 14 flights linking Bangkok and Zurich and one between Phuket and Zurich.
